Should you outsource your recruitment process?

A recent survey from Monster revealed that small-business owners struggle with the recruitment process. From start to finish, it's proving to cause a number of problems, the biggest concerns being reputation damage and a loss of productivity. But it's a double-edged sword, as 82 per cent of small-business owners recognise that attracting and retaining talent is by far the number one asset in the pursuit of business success.

Small-business owners waste around 50 hours on every bad hire.

With the recruitment process taking up to four months and for the most part costing more than was to be expected, owners who go at it alone are running into troubles further down the track when the person they picked didn't work out. More than one-third of business owners who had made a bad hire recently estimated that it had cost them more than 50 hours of on-the-job time, not to mention the wasted costs in advertising. And after being burned, it can make it hard to take on anybody new, according to Senior Vice President of Small Business Solutions Meredith Hanrahan.

"Small-business owners struggle to find the right person for the job, and as a result have made the wrong hiring decision on more than one occasion," she said.

Small-business owners set to benefit from outsourcing recruitment

Finding suitable candidates is a difficult process. While you may think that it is your interviewing skills or maybe even the fact you didn't pre-screen candidates that may have led to bad decisions, a smooth recruitment process begins with understanding exactly what you want from the employee. An aligned and optimised job advertisement is needed to attract the right candidates, and then a clear evaluation process that ensures the candidate has the skills to excel. Following your gut can feel right at the time, but there is no guarantee that it will lead to results.

While hiring in-house may seem easier, the risk of bad hire often isn't worth it.While hiring in-house may seem easier, the risk of bad hire often isn't worth it.
